Line U8
Between Wittenau underground and urban rail and Hermannstraße
underground and urban rail stations.
The U8 has 24 stations and is 18 kilometres long. It is the second
north/south line, running from Wittenau via Gesundbrunnen to
Neukölln.
Kaiser Wilhelm II was impressed by the suspension railway he saw
during a visit to Wuppertal in 1900, so AEG drafted plans for both
underground and elevated railway systems. A period of tough
negotiations with the city of Berlin followed, until the two
parties finally agreed on a contract in 1912 and work could begin.
Not until the end of the twenties were major parts of the line
completed.
