The U4 is currently the shortest underground line, running from Nollendorfplatz to Innsbrucker Platz.
In 1903, the city of Schöneberg planned a connection whit the Berlin underground network. Because the route was not financially promising, however, negotiations with the Berlin elevated railway company were unsuccessful. The city of Schöneberg consequently decided to build its own underground line in 1908.
