New Route Links
The BVG and innovation
The extension of the U2 line northwards from the Vinetastraße
metro station (U-Bahn) to the new Pankow metro and urban rail
station (S/U-Bahn) creates another link in the transport network.
The Pankow metro station opened on 16 September 2000.
Berlin's Parliament and Government district will be connected to
the metro system via the extension of the U5 line from the
Alexanderplatz metro and urban rail station (S/U-Bahn) to the
Berlin Hauptbahnhof urban rail station (S-Bahn). This metro
extension will close the corridor in the city centre between the
urban rail line to the north and the U2 metro line to the
south.
Plans call for the extension to have six new metro stations:
Berliner Rathaus, Spreeinsel, Unter den Linden, Brandenburger Tor,
Reichstag, and Hauptbahnhof/Lehrter Bahnhof.
Municipal land-use planning also ensures the right of way for
additional potential routes that make sense from current
perspectives.
