The Tram System
A modern strategy for the future
The tram has experienced a renaissance in many of the world's
major cities over recent years as a modern, high-performance, and
comfortable means of public transportation.
The tram meets high expectations in Berlin as well. Together with
the urban rail (S-
Bahn) and metro (U-Bahn) systems, it forms the backbone of the
city's public transportation system.
We are developing our trams into a highly modern
system.
Attractive features of the system include the following:
- faster travel times
- punctuality and reliability
- good links with other transport services
- clear and customer-friendly schedules, cleanliness, and
comfort
- wheelchair accessibility
- cost-effective and environmentally friendly
This includes:
Modernizing and refurbishing the tram lines with new stops, rails,
electronic shunts, shunt heaters, information and communications
systems, overhead wire systems, reconfigured signal systems.
Fuel supply systems are being expanded, reinforced, and modernized
in such a way that our vehicles' braking current can be recovered
and reused, which means saving energy.
