General information on the 29-euro subscription offer

What is the 29-euro subscription offer?

Following the end of the ‘9-euro ticket’ offer as part of the German government’s second relief package for energy costs, Berlin’s state government and transport companies worked to develop a follow-up ticket. It would sustainably contribute to the mobility transition – i.e. show a commitment to climate protection and make public transport even more attractive to even more Berliners. The state of Berlin is financing this promotional offer and thus making a clear contribution to aid with Berliners’ cost of living.

How long is the 29-euro subscription offer available, and when does it start?

The offer is valid for three calendar months, starting on 1 October 2022. The offer ends on 31 December 2022.

Where does the 29-euro subscription offer apply?

The offer is valid in the city of Berlin (fare zone Berlin AB). It is not valid for use anywhere outside Berlin. An extension ticket must be purchased for trips into fare zone Berlin C.

Which fare products can be used with the 29-euro subscription offer?

The offer is only available with subscription tickets.

From 1 October 2022 to 31 December 2022, the monthly price for the following subscription tickets in fare zone Berlin AB will be reduced to 29 euros:

  • VBB subscription eco-tickets paid monthly subscription or annually
  • 10 o’clock subscription tickets paid monthly or annually
  • VBB corporate tickets paid monthly or annually
  • Trainee subscription monthly tickets paid monthly as set out in the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 4, Table 1.2.1

Reduction of the monthly price to 29 euros is only available with a subscription. All other tickets remain at their usual prices.

How does the 29-euro subscription offer work?

From 1 October 2022 to 31 December 2022, the monthly price for the following subscription tickets in fare zone Berlin AB will be reduced to 29 euros:

  • VBB eco-tickets paid monthly or annually
  • 10 o’clock tickets paid monthly or annually
  • VBB corporate tickets paid monthly or annually
  • Trainee monthly tickets paid monthly as set out in the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 4, Table 1.2.1 (fare level BARB)
What about transferability of the 29-euro subscription offer?

For subscriptions that are reduced to 29 euros during the offer period, all conditions continue to apply as before.

  • VBB eco-tickets and 10 o’clock tickets:
    The subscription on the VBB-fahrCard (chip card) is transferable to other persons at any time.
  • Signed up for your subscription at a BVG customer centre and received a subscription card with tokens? These can also be transferred to other persons.
  • Purchased a subscription start card in the form of a token for October 2022 at a station shop? This can also be transferred to other persons.

Exception in October 2022 for new customers:

  • Signed up online? If everything’s correct, you’ll receive a subscription order confirmation with a start card. This is a personal ticket and therefore NOT transferable to other persons. For November you’ll receive your VBB-fahrCard (chip card), which can then also be transferred to other persons.
What’s going to happen after 1 January 2023?

If you do not cancel your subscription by 31 December 2022, the subscription contract for the selected fare product will run for a total of 12 months.
You also have the option to switch to another VBB fare product, to another fare zone, or to the successor product to the 9-euro ticket, which is expected to be valid throughout Germany from 1 January.

Existing customers

Information for existing customers

I’m already a subscriber of the participating fare products. How can I benefit from the offer?

You’ll automatically benefit from the offer. The ticket price will be reduced to 29 euros for the months of October, November, and December 2022, with automatic reimbursement of the difference by the transport company you signed up with. Your monthly debit will be reduced to 29 euros; for subscriptions with annual payment, the difference will be refunded after the end of the offer period. Your VBB-fahrCard remains valid as before.

I’m a subscriber of a fare product that isn’t part of the offer. Can I switch?

Yes, you can switch to a subscription for a participating fare product. The easiest way to do this is online at www.bvg.de/Abo. The chip card will be sent to you by post. Alternatively, you can switch at a BVG customer centre. In this case, the new fare product will be added to the existing chip. You can only switch to a new fare product on the first of a month, not at any time within a month. Any funds that are debited at the end of the month for the previous fare product will be offset with the following debit.

Is my VBB-fahrCard still valid or do I need to show some other authorisation to travel?

Your VBB-fahrCard is still valid as authorisation to travel.
If you are a subscriber for a personal fare product, e.g. the VBB subscription ticket 65plus, and want to take advantage of the 29-euro subscription offer, you can switch to a subscription for the VBB eco-ticket Berlin AB at a BVG customer centre. The switch will be recorded on your VBB-FahrCard; the BVG does not provide replacement cards. With your VBB-FahrCard you can make use of all the advantages of the VBB eco-ticket in the city area of Berlin, e.g. transferability and taking other persons with you.

Does the 29-euro subscription offer change the contract period of my subscription?

No, the agreed contract period remains unchanged.

I have a VBB subscription for a fare product that is also valid outside Berlin AB.

The offer is being financed by the state of Berlin and can therefore only apply to Berlin subscriptions.

I have a 10 o’clock ticket subscription. Can I still only travel after 10 am?

No, subscriptions for the 10 o’clock ticket for Berlin AB can also be used before 10 o’clock during the offer period from October to December 2022. The other fare regulations relating to taking other persons with you and transferability continue to apply unchanged.

New customers

How can I get a subscription and benefit from the 29-euro subscription offer?

You can sign up for a subscription for the above-mentioned fare products at any time during the offer period. Your subscription contract will then start on 1 October, 1 November, or 1 December 2022. The most convenient way to sign up is online at www.bvg.de/abo or in person at all BVG customer centres and station shops. Please note that we expect a high level of interest due to the speed with which the offer has been introduced and the extremely attractive price. A waiting period, especially for anyone who wants to make use of the offer from 1 October 2022, is to be expected. Wherever possible, please therefore use the online form at www.bvg.de/abo.

From when can I get a subscription and benefit from the 29-euro subscription offer?

Subscriptions starting in October 2022 can be taken out from 26 September 2022 at www.bvg.de/abo. Subscriptions starting in October can be taken out online until 20 October.

I’d like to become a subscriber during the offer period. How will the offer affect my new subscription?

The minimum subscription period is 12 months. This means that if you remain a subscription customer for the selected fare product after the offer period, you don’t need to do anything. Your subscription will simply continue. After the minimum contract period, you can cancel at the end of a month any time.
If you want to change to another fare product after the offer period, you can do so at www.bvg.de/abo or at BVG customer centres.
If you are unhappy with our service and decide not to continue your subscription beyond the offer period, you can cancel your subscription at any time at the end of the month without any disadvantages. The easiest way to do this is to use the online form at www.bvg.de/abo. Alternatively, you can also cancel your subscription in writing or at a BVG customer centre.

I’d would like to sign up for a subscription in the current month. What do I need to do?

Up to 20 October, you can sign up for a subscription starting in October 2022 by going to www.bvg.de/abo. In addition, the usual deadlines for subscriptions apply. Subscriptions with a start date of November 2022 can be taken out online by 20 October 2022, with a start date of December 2022 by 20 November 2022.
Orders for subscriptions can be placed at customer centres until 25 October for November and until 25 November for December. If you sign up for a subscription at a customer centre, a VBB-FahrCard will be issued immediately. In some cases, a paper token may be issued as a subscription card for October 2022 instead of the VBB-FahrCard. If you take out a subscription for the VBB eco-ticket, the fare regulations on transferability and taking other persons with you are also included on the paper token.
It is also possible to purchase subscriptions at station shops in underground stations. Subscriptions, however, always start on the first of the following month. Please note the deadline for submission by the 10th of the previous month.  For October 2022, you can purchase a paper token (subscription start card for October) at a station shop for 29 euros, and at the time submit your subscription order form, to start in November 2022.

What about transferability of the 29-euro subscription offer?

For subscriptions that are reduced to 29 euros during the offer period, all conditions continue to apply as before.

  • VBB eco-tickets and 10 o’clock tickets:
    The subscription on the VBB-fahrCard (chip card) is transferable to other persons at any time.
  • Signed up for your subscription at a BVG customer centre and received a subscription card with tokens? These can also be transferred to other persons.

Can I take other people with me during the offer period?

The rules on taking other persons with you apply as before. If you have a VBB eco-ticket or VBB corporate ticket, you can take up to four persons with you, but only one of them may be older than 14. This rule applies on Mondays to Fridays from 8 pm to 3 am on the next day. It applies all day on weekends and public holidays.
You cannot take anyone with you if you have a trainee ticket, but you can take a bicycle free of charge.
The 10 o’clock ticket does not allow you take anyone along with you.

I’ve taken out a subscription for 29 euros during the offer period. Can I take my dog with me?

Yes, all subscriptions allow you to take a dog with you.

Does my subscription end automatically after the 29-euro subscription offer or do I need to cancel it?

Subscription contracts always have a minimum contract period of 12 months. If you cancel, the usual additional charges for the price of the applicable monthly ticket as set out in the VBB Fares Scale will be suspended for the months in which the offer is valid. There are therefore no disadvantages for the offer months if you cancel.

What happens if my regular VBB subscription ends during the offer period?

If your VBB subscription expires during the offer period and you did not cancel it, it will be renewed indefinitely at the fare conditions that applied during the offer period. This means that you naturally also benefit from the reduced price of 29 euros.

How do holders of the free Berlin school student ticket benefit from the 29-euro subscription offer?

Berlin’s school students already enjoy the use of free public transport. There is therefore no monetary advantage.

I forgot my VBB-fahrCard/subscription order confirmation and received a penalty fare.

The penalty fare is reduced to 7 euros if, within one week from the day your ticket was checked, you can show the transport company dealing with your penalty fare that you were already the holder of a subscription ticket participating in the offer at the time of the ticket inspection, i.e. your subscription must have been valid on the day of the ticket inspection. The easiest way to do this if your ticket is checked on BVG public transport is by going to www.bvg-ebe.de.

I took out a subscription online but my VBB-fahrCard for October 2022 has not yet been delivered. What can I do?

Due to the speed with which the 29-euro subscription offer was introduced, your VBB-fahrCard may not be delivered until the end of the month if you purchase a subscription beginning in October 2022 online. You’ll receive the VBB-fahrCard for use from November in good time by post. As long as you have not received your VBB-fahrCard for October 2022, your subscription order confirmation with start card is valid as personal authorisation to travel for October 2022. Please take the entire subscription order confirmation email with you, either in printed or digital form, as well as a personal document to prove your identity in the event of an inspection. The subscription order confirmation with start card is only valid for the person named on it and is not transferable. If you have taken out a VBB eco-ticket subscription, you can also use the order confirmation with the start card.

Can I add my 29-euro subscription to the apps?

No, unfortunately not. The ticket can only be presented as your fahrCard or subscription order confirmation email together with the start card. Transfer to the BVG apps (Fahrinfo app, Ticket app, and Jelbi) is not possible.

I have a VBB corporate ticket. What do I need to know? And how will I be reimbursed?

VBB corporate ticket customers with fare zones Berlin AB also benefit from the reduction of the monthly price to 29 euros. The only exception to this is how the offer is applied to subscriptions:
If the transport company holding the contract and the employer have agreed to debit the company ticket costs from the private accounts of the participating employees, the amount is automatically reduced. Only 29 euros is payable per month for the three months of the offer.
If BVG submits an invoice to the employer for the total amount of all VBB corporate tickets, this invoice takes the offer period into account and the amount is reduced for the subscriptions for fare zone Berlin AB. The employer is responsible for passing on the financial benefit to its employees.

Can VBB tickets that have already been purchased be returned for a refund?

Tickets with a printed validity date will only be exchanged/refunded if they are returned before the first day of validity.
Partially used tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Please note that holders of tickets that start on a day other than the first of a month, e.g. from 10 September to 9 October, will not be able to obtain a partial refund for the days that fall in October. The fare terms and conditions of the VBB Fares Scale, Part A, Section 10, apply.
Tickets without a specific validity period that require validation do not need to be exchanged. They can be used after the end of the offer period.

Where can I returned purchased VBB tickets?

You can assert your claims at the issuing or contracting transport company. You can see which one this is by checking the logo/imprint of the transport company on the VBB ticket.

Can I get a partial refund for subscriptions tickets valid in Berlin AB and beyond?

No, there is no refund for subscriptions such as the VBB trainee subscription or the VBB subscription ticket 65plus.

I paid cash for a VBB annual ticket and would like to make use of the 29-euro subscription offer. What do I need to do?

VBB annual tickets are not reduced under this offer.
You can, however, also benefit from the offer by taking out a subscription for the VBB eco-ticket Berlin AB during the offer period and surrendering your remaining valid annual ticket tokens at a customer centre of the issuing transport company before the 1st day of validity. The refund is free of charge and cashless.
