Conditions of carriage

Bicycles, luggage, pets, children, and accompanying persons for disabled passengers – these are the regulations you must observe when taking someone or something with you:

Travelling with children

Children under six years of age can generally be taken along free of charge. A maximum of three children may be taken on ferries. Children under four years of age may only use public transportation if they are accompanied by an individual who is at least six years of age.

Travelling with strollers and luggage

If you have a valid ticket, you may take a stroller and luggage with you for free.

Disabled passengers and chaperones

The free transportation of disabled passengers is governed by the Schwerbehindertengesetz § 228 (1) Social Security Code - Book Nine - (SGB IX). To prove eligibility, a valid disability pass with an attached or integrated validation token must be presented.
As a general rule, companions of disabled passengers may be taken along free of charge if the authorization to take an accompanying person is documented in their disability pass. In addition to an accompanying person, a dog may also be taken along free of charge.
Wheelchairs and other orthopedic aids can be taken along free of charge if the passenger is in possession of a valid ticket or a disability pass with affixed or integrated validation stamp, and if the vehicle design permits such transportation. Disabled passengers with markings G (walking disabled) and aG (extraordinarily walking disabled) may take a bicycle with them on the S-Bahn and regional trains, in accordance with the GVBB tariff, Part A, § 11.

Traveling with a bicycle

Passengers may travel with a bicycle if they purchase a bicycle ticket.
Holders of a valid Berlin student ticket, a trainee ticket or a semester ticket for the Berlin sub-zones AB, BC or for the entire ABC tariff zone do not need to purchase a ticket for their bicycles. This provision does not apply to personal subscriptions in combination with the respective tariff area ABC or for the entire network.
Bicycles may be taken on S-Bahn and underground trains, local railways, ferries, and on trams in carriages marked with a bicycle symbol, if there is sufficient space available. Bicycles with more than two wheels, bicycles for transporting loads and trailers, and motorized means of transportation may not be taken along.
Excluded from this are electric scooters with a maximum continuous rating of less than 500 watts in accordance with the Ordinance on Small Electric Vehicles (eKFV) of 06.06.19 and bicycles with an auxiliary electric motor. The installed batteries may not be removed, charged, or used in any other way (e.g. as a power bank) during transportation.
Each passenger may only take one bicycle (this includes bicycle-like scooters) or one tandem (only on trains of the regional railway and the Berlin S-Bahn). It is not permitted to take bicycles on buses, minibuses, and trams, unless these means of transportation are equipped for this purpose and marked accordingly. This also applies to rail replacement transportation.

The decision to allow bicycles on board is ultimately up to the operating staff. If space is needed for a wheelchair or a stroller, the passenger must exit the means of transportation along with their bicycle. There is no claim for reimbursement of the transportation charge already paid.
Children’s bicycles with a maximum rim diameter of up to 12.5 inches are considered carry-on luggage. Fully folded bicycles and fully folded scooters are also considered carry-on luggage.

Travelling with pets

In general, animals brought along must not compromise the safety of the operation or bother any passengers. In case of doubt, our staff will decide whether to allow or refuse travel to an animal.
Small pets (up to the size of a domestic cat), which are not dangerous, and which are kept in closed containers (e.g. crates) similar to carry-on luggage, may be taken along. The containers must be designed in such a way as to avoid any adverse impact on fellow passengers and property.
In addition, dogs that are not (or cannot) be accommodated in containers similar to carry-on luggage, may still be taken on board, provided they are kept on a leash and fitted with a muzzle. By announcement in the timetable, dogs may also be excluded from certain means of transportation. Guide dogs and guide dogs in training are not affected by the provisions of this paragraph.
Guide dogs for the blind and service dogs for disabled individuals, whose ID card contains proof of their eligibility to bring a companion (guide dogs for the blind and service dogs for disabled individuals as defined by § 228 Para. 6 No. 2 SGB I), are always allowed to be taken along.
Animals are not allowed on seats.
