1. General information about the 9-euro ticket

What is the 9-euro ticket?

Under the German government’s second relief package for energy costs, personal monthly tickets for public transport are being reduced to a price of just 9 euros for a period of three months. The 9-euro ticket is a one-off relief measure backed by substantial federal funding. The federal states, local authorities, transport associations, and transport companies are all working together to fulfil this offer.

How long is the 9-euro ticket available, and when does it start?

The 9-euro ticket will be available for three calendar months, starting on 1 June 2022. The offer ends on 31 August 2022.

How much does the ticket cost?

The 9-euro ticket costs 9 euros a month. For the offer period of three months, it can be purchased each month and used for travel on all public transport In other words, the ticket costs 9 euros for June, 9 euros for July, and 9 euros for August.

When is the 9-euro ticket valid?

The 9-euro ticket is always valid for one calendar month (e.g. from 1 June to 30 June 2022). Other validity periods will not be offered, but you can purchase a ticket at any time. What this means, for example, is that if you buy a 9-euro ticket on 8 June, you’ll be entitled to travel for the rest of June. From 1 July, you’ll then need to buy a new ticket.

Who can buy the 9-euro ticket?

Anyone can purchase the 9-euro monthly tickets. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge. Subscribers can find more information in section 4.

Can children travel with the 9-euro ticket?

Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge. From the age of 6, children must pay 9 euros a month for the 9-euro ticket. There is no special children’s ticket within the scheme.

Is there a reduced-fare option for this ticket?

No, the ticket costs 9 euros a month. Given that the ticket is already heavily subsidised, no further discounts are available.

Will services be increased for the 9-euro ticket?

The Berlin Senate has ordered additional services from the BVG to coincide with the scheme. In order to meet the level of demand expected in June, July, and August, the frequency of many bus, underground, and tram services will be increased, especially on inner-city connections and commuter/excursion routes. Popular excursion routes to the Wannsee lido and Tegeler See lake will also be operated again.

2. Validity of the 9-euro ticket

Where is the 9-euro ticket valid?

The ticket is valid on local public transport throughout Germany. It can be used for travel on all underground trains, S-Bahn trains, trams, public buses, and some ferries. It is also valid on local rail services (regional trains, regional express trains), but not on long-distance services operated by Deutsche Bahn (e.g. InterCity, ICE, EC) or trains/buses operated by other companies (e.g. FlixTrain/FlixBus).

Is the 9-euro ticket valid in the VBB network?

The 9-euro ticket is valid throughout Germany. It is therefore also valid throughout the network in Berlin and Brandenburg, i.e. for all forms of transport offered by the transport companies in the Berlin-Brandenburg public transport network.

What validity does the ticket have?

During the period of the scheme, the ticket is valid from the first day of the month (00:00) to the last day of the month (24:00) – all day long for a whole month. Please note that the ticket is not valid on the last day of a prior month or the first day of a subsequent month.

Can I get the 9-euro ticket starting on another day?

No, this ticket is available for calendar months only. That means, for example, that it cannot be purchased for a period such as 13 July to 12 August.

Is the 9-euro ticket transferable?

No, the 9-euro ticket is for personal use and is only valid with the passenger’s full name written on the ticket. You will need to carry some form of ID with you, too. As a mobile ticket, the 9-euro ticket is also non-transferable, but in this case you do not need to enter your name on the ticket. Subscribers can find more information in section 4.

Can my partner, my children, my dog, or my bicycle travel with me on the 9-euro ticket?

The 9-euro ticket is only valid for the person it is issued to. Children under the age of 6, one buggy, and luggage can be taken along free of charge. Other persons, dogs, and bicycles cannot be taken along free of charge with this ticket. Subscribers can find more information in section 4.

I’ve bought the 9-euro ticket and want to take my bicycle with me. What do I need to do?

For travel with a bicycle in the VBB network, you’ll also need to buy a bicycle ticket as set out in the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 4, Table 3.
For travel on national rail services, you’ll need a bicycle ticket issued by Deutsche Bahn AG. In this case, you can also continue travel in the VBB network area during the period of the scheme.
For bicycle fares in other public transport networks, please check the information provided by local transport associations and companies.
It is not possible to purchase a further 9-euro ticket for your bicycle.

Can I travel first class with the 9-euro ticket?

The 9-euro ticket is valid only for second-class travel. You also cannot upgrade your ticket for travel in first class.

Is the 9-euro ticket also valid on long-distance trains?

The 9-euro ticket is not valid for long-distance trains (e.g. ICE, IC, EC).

Can the 9-euro ticket be used for travel to Poland?

No, the ticket is not valid for cross-border travel. If you want to travel to Poland, you’ll need to buy a regular-fare ticket.

3. Ways to buy the 9-euro ticket

Where can I buy the 9-euro ticket?

You can purchase the 9-euro ticket at manned ticket outlets, at BVG customer centres, at BVG agencies, at ticket machines, and as a mobile ticket.
The ticket cannot be purchased on BVG buses or trams.

What else do I need to know when buying the ticket?

The 9-euro ticket on paper is only valid if the passenger’s full name has been entered on the ticket. If you purchase the 9-euro ticket as a mobile ticket, the regulations of the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 8, apply.

From when can I buy the 9-euro ticket?

Some details are still being worked out, and sales channels are being prepared. Further information to follow.

Can I buy the 9-euro ticket for three months right now?

The 9-euro tickets are sold separately for each month. If you want a ticket for the entire period of the scheme, you’ll need to buy three 9-euro tickets at 9 euros each (= 27 euros) with each month of validity printed on the tickets.

Does the 9-euro ticket expire automatically or need to be cancelled?

The 9-euro ticket is a monthly ticket and expires automatically.

Can I return the 9-euro ticket?

No, you cannot cancel or exchange the 9-euro ticket.

Can holders of the Berlin ticket S make use of the offer?

Yes. Instead of their tickets, holders of the Berlin ticket S can purchase the 9-euro ticket during the period of the scheme. Please see section 5.

Can I buy several 9-euro tickets in the app for other people travelling with me?

You can indeed purchase several 9-euro tickets in the app. These tickets, though, are issued to you personally, so anyone else will have to travel with you at all times. This is therefore only a good idea if they are part of your immediate family, e.g. children.
Otherwise, we recommend that each person create their own account and purchase the tickets separately. This way you stay flexible and each person can use their ticket when and how they wish.

4. Rules for subscriptions during the offer period

Holders of subscriptions

Holders of BVG subscription tickets can make use of the 9-euro ticket offer. This includes holders of

  • subscription VBB eco-tickets paid monthly or annually
  • subscription trainee and school student tickets paid monthly as set out in the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 4, Tables 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 (see below for information on the free Berlin school student ticket)
  • VBB trainee subscription tickets paid monthly or annually
  • BVG 10 o’clock subscription ticket paid monthly or annually
  • VBB 65plus subscription tickets paid monthly or annually
  • BVG corporate tickets paid monthly or annually

Holders of these tickets need to take no action to make use of the scheme. The ticket price will be reduced to 9 euros for the months of June, July, and August, with automatic reimbursement of the difference.
The BVG fahrCard is valid for travel and recognised throughout Germany.

Please note: The rules regarding transferability and taking other people with you continue to apply within the set area of validity for the VBB subscription ticket, but not beyond.

Holders of semester tickets can also make use of the 9-euro ticket offer. How these tickets will be reduced to 9 euros is currently being worked out. More information will be available soon from your university administration office.

The 9-euro ticket is valid throughout Germany. But I have a BVG subscription ticket that’s only for a specific area. What now?

The area of validity is extended to cover all of Germany. You can use public transport throughout the country with your VBB subscription ticket.

What about friends and family?

The option to take friends and family with you is limited to the area of validity of your BVG subscription. In other words, you cannot take them throughout the network or across Germany.

My BVG subscription/semester ticket allows me to take others/a bicycle with me. Can I do this throughout Germany now?

No, the rules on taking friends and family with you apply only to the area of validity of your subscription (e.g. Berlin ABC), not throughout Germany.

I have a BVG 10 o’clock ticket subscription. Can I still only travel after 10 am?

No. The time restriction ceases to apply if your subscription is valid during the period of the offer. With your 10 o’clock ticket, you can travel on public transport at any time on all days on which your subscription is valid while the scheme is running. This also applies to the selected area of validity during the months of the offer.

How do holders of the free Berlin school student ticket benefit from the 9-euro ticket offer?

The ticket for Berlin fare zones AB is already free of charge. There’s no financial benefit, then, but holders of the free Berlin AB school student ticket can now also travel throughout Germany. Please note that the rules on taking bicycles still apply only to Berlin AB.

Is the 9-euro ticket also valid on long-distance trains?

The 9-euro ticket is not valid for long-distance trains (e.g. ICE, IC, EC).

I’d like to become a subscriber during the offer period. How will the offer affect my new subscription?

The subscription is for a fixed minimum contract period of 12 months. If you purchase a subscription, the months that fall within the offer period are reduced to 9 euros. The fare terms and conditions of the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 5, apply.

What happens if my BVG subscription ends during the 9-euro ticket offer period?

It will be automatically renewed until cancelled. The fare terms and conditions of the VBB Fares Scale, Appendix 5, apply.

Does the 9-euro ticket offer change the contract period of my subscription?

No, the agreed contract period remains unchanged.

Is my BVG fahrCard still valid, or do I need to buy the 9-euro ticket?

The BVG fahrCard is valid for travel and recognised throughout Germany.

I have a BVG corporate ticket. What do I need to know?

Reimbursements will be made as for other subscription tickets. If you pay monthly, payment will be reduced to 9 euros for the three months. Corporate ticket holders who pay annually will receive a refund.

5. Exchange and refund of BVG tickets

Can BVG tickets that have already been purchased be returned for a refund?

Tickets with a printed validity date will only be exchanged/refunded if they are returned before the first day of validity.
Partially used tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Please note that holders of tickets that start on a day other than the first of a month, e.g. from 10 May to 9 June, will not be able to obtain a partial refund for the days that fall in June.
Tickets without a specific validity period that require validation do not need to be exchanged. They can be used after the end of the offer period.

Where can I returned purchased BVG tickets?

Please visit a customer centre or the BVG’s refunds office, where tickets bearing the BVG logo can be returned.

I have a BVG subscription. How will I be reimbursed?

You do not need to do anything. If you pay monthly, payment will be reduced to 9 euros for the three months. Subscribers who pay annually will receive a refund.

I paid cash for an annual ticket and would like to make use of the 9-euro ticket. What do I need to do?

Your token accompanying your annual ticket does not need to be exchanged. It is valid as a personal ticket for second-class travel throughout Germany. Keep the tokens until the end of offer period. You can then request a refund from the BVG and will then receive a non-cash refund on submission of the tokens, minus 9 euros per token for each month of the offer period. Refunds can be requested until 31 October 2022. Monthly tokens for the annual ticket returned in advance of one of the months of the offer will be refunded in full upon simultaneous purchase or presentation of a 9-euro ticket bearing your full name. This refund will also be made non-cash.

What is the procedure for exchanging or refunding the Berlin ticket S?

The Berlin ticket S can be returned prior to its first day of validity.

What is the procedure for refunding semester tickets?

Students have already paid for their semester tickets when they re-register for a semester. Refund options for the offer period are currently being worked out. More information will be available soon from your university administration office.

I have a BVG corporate ticket. How will I be reimbursed?

Reimbursements will be made as for other subscription tickets. If you pay monthly, payment will be reduced to 9 euros for the three months. Corporate ticket holders who pay annually will receive a refund.
