Better access,better lives

All our buses have been accessible since 2009, all trams since 2021. We are also working hard to ensure that all subway stations are barrier-free with an elevator and are equipped with a guidance system for the blind.

Barrier-free travel through Berlin with the BVG

The BVG offers a free training day for people with reduced mobility at regular intervals. On various dates throughout the year, barrier-free boarding and alighting from buses, trams and underground trains is explained, demonstrated and practiced. The practical exercises and helpful tips are intended to promote independence in everyday life so that all our passengers can reach their destination safely.

Starting immediately, we are testing “talking buses” on Line 186: The buses automatically announce their route number and destination at bus stops. This is supplemented by an audible door-location signal to help blind and visually impaired passengers more easily identify which bus is in front of them and where the boarding area is. 

Twenty test users are participating in the trial and providing direct feedback based on their everyday experiences. In a second test phase, a mobility assistance app will also be introduced, designed to provide even more targeted support for navigation, announcements, and digital boarding and alighting requests. By the end of 2026, the insights gained from the pilot program will be incorporated into the phased rollout of Berlin-wide audio passenger information on buses and trams.
