Goodbye, diesel!
The BVG is powering Berlin’s mobility transition – using renewable energy of course. Our subways and trams are already running fully electrically. On the road, around 300 electrically powered buses and their charging ports are currently helping to reduce CO2 emissions in our city and improve air quality for a livable Berlin.
Our goal is to be completely fossil-free by the 2030s. To achieve this, the BVG is concentrating on converting existing bus depots, building the first purely e-bus depot and setting up charging infrastructure at terminal stops throughout the city.
This project of the century will not be implemented overnight. The BVG is therefore working on operating our young, modern diesel bus fleet in a more climate-friendly way. An important step will be HVO100 – a renewable fuel made from residual and waste materials. This reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to diesel and is a transitional solution until the BVG bus fleet too will be purely electric.
To ensure that everything goes according to plan, a framework agreement for the manufacture and delivery of new, electrically powered articulated buses was concluded at the end of 2023. The contract was awarded to the manufacturer Solaris, including an order for the first 50 electric articulated buses.
